Anti-childporn site launched
06/07/2008 14:36  - (SA)

  • 'Porn won't kill you'
  • US eyes free internet, no porn
  • 30 kids rescued in Mpumalanga
  • Johannesburg - The South African government has launched an anti-child pornography and sexual abuse website, which it claims is the first such initiative on the continent, officials said on Sunday.

"The primary purpose of the internet hotline is to prevent distribution of child pornography when detected through the internet," a government statement said.

The internet website, which runs throughout the week, will be used by members of the public to "report and expose incidences of child sexual abuse images found on the internet," it said.

International networking and partnerships will also allow the government to take action against child pornography on the internet hosted outside South Africa.

The internet hotline, launched at the end of last month by the Department of Home Affairs, will forward a gathered detailed report relating to child pornography to the law enforcement agencies within the country for prosecution.

The 24-hour service will enable members of the public to immediately report discovered child sexual abuse images, and all information provided will be treated with utmost confidentiality.
