Johannesburg - A science reading room at the University of Pretoria's Mamelodi campus was opened by the University and United States of America Embassy, the two bodies said on Saturday.
"Residents, such as school learners, teachers, students and community members, in the township...will from now enjoy access and use of a new science and technology facility," said the university and embassy in a joint statement.
The Mae Jemison US Science Reading Room was opened on Friday afternoon by the US Ambassador to SA, Eric M Bost and UP Vice-Chancellor and Principal Calie Pistorius.
The room costing, R2.5m, is named after the first African-American woman astronaut, Dr Mae Jemison.
The facility houses books, films, magazines, computers with internet access, exhibition space and an audio-visual auditorium.
Jemison sent a message read out at the opening.
"Science and mathematics education must be a priority for all students. Remember, our children are innately curious, energetic, motivated and enthusiastic and reading is the key," she said.
"I hope we can come here every day," said grade three student Donald Thabang from Mamelodi who attended the opening.
