Powell: Iraq making no effort to disarm
05/02/2003 17:53 - (SA)
New York - US Secretary of State Colin Powell says Iraq has made no effort to disarm as required by the United Nations.
He on Wednesday played for the security council an audiotape in which one Iraqi officer tells another to make sure that no modified vehicles are present if UN arms inspectors visit.
"We evacuated everything. We don't have anything left," the junior officer reassured him. He was referring to a vehicle from the al-Kindi company, which Powell said was involved in "prohibited weapons activity."
"What we have learned over the years is deeply troubling. Saddam Hussein and his regime have made no effort to disarm as required," Powell told the council.
Powell was speaking to the council to try to convince a doubting world that Iraq is hiding weapons of mass destructionand that war may be needed to make sure it disarms.
