Another tropical storm forms
29/11/2005 20:51 - (SA)
Miami - Epsilon, the 26th Atlantic tropical storm of the year, formed on Tuesday, one day short of the official conclusion of a record-breaking hurricane season, the Miami-based National Hurricane Centre said.
Epsilon formed in the central Atlantic Ocean, about 1 360 kilometres east of Bermuda and was moving west on a track that would not threaten land, according to NHC forecasts.
The rare late-season tropical storm capped what has been a record year for hurricane activity in the Atlantic.
Of the record 26 tropical storms that formed over the Atlantic since the season started on June 1, an unprecendeted 13 became hurricanes.
Another record was set with three of the hurricanes ranking at category five, the highest on the Saffir-Simpson intensity scale.
The hurricane season officially ends on November 30, though this year it looks certain to be extended by Tropical Storm Epsilon.
