London - Two British soldiers are reported missing after an attack on their vehicles in southern Iraq, the British defence ministry said on Monday.

"We can confirm that two British soldiers are reported missing following an attack on British vehicles in southern Iraq on the 23rd of March," a defence ministry spokesperson said.

"I'm trying to establish the detail at the moment," the spokesperson said.

"Efforts are being made to find and recover the two soldiers. Further information will be given when available," he added.

He could not confirm whether the missing soldiers had anything to do with a report in the Daily Mail that three soldiers were missing, feared dead in the first combat casualties suffered by British troops.

The tabloid newspaper reported that the three were travelling in two army Land Rovers when they were hit by Iraqi rocket-propelled grenades during fierce fighting outside Basra. - Sapa-AFP
