Revenge Saddam's last weapon

Tel Aviv - American prisoners of war in Iraq are in a precarious situation because Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has nothing to lose by taking revenge on them, US television journalist Bob Simon said on Monday.
Simon, who was held as a prisoner for 40 days during the 1991 Gulf War, said he relived the "nightmare" and "hell" he went through when he saw the four males and one female soldier being shown on the Qatari al-Jazeera television. "I'm particularly horrified at the notion that their situation is much worse than mine was then. When I was a prisoner, Saddam Hussein was not fighting his last war. Today, he has nothing left to lose," he said in an article published in the Israeli Ma'ariv daily.
"Soon he'll be left with his last weapon: revenge," he added.
The CBS correspondent was captured by Iraqi forces near the Saudi-Kuwaiti border in January 1991.
Accused of being a spy, he spent 40 days in Iraqi prisons, where he says he suffered beatings, torture and starvation. He later wrote a book about his experience, entitled "40 Days".
He said that in 30 years of war reporting, nothing compared to the fear he felt being held prisoner in Iraq.
"I did not have to see the look in their eyes of those prisoners to know that they preferred to be dead at that moment. I didn't have to, because I've simply been there, in their place, in their nightmare." - Sapa-DPA
