As-Saliyah, Qatar - US-led forces have taken about 3 000 Iraqi prisoners of war in their four-day-old campaign to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein, their commander saidon Monday.

General Tommy Franks, the head of the US Central Command, said many others had simply laid down their weapons and gone home in the face of advancing US and British troops.

"I think our enemy prisoner of war count is in the vicinity of 3 000," he told a news conference at Centcom's forward command post here.
