More than 100 bodies on road
25/03/2003 13:31 - (SA)
Nasiriyah, Iraq - More than 100 Iraqi bodies littered the road north from Nasiriyah where US marines headed toward Baghdad after fierce fighting in this southern city, an AFP correspondent reported.
It was not clear how many were soldiers or civilians trying to flee the key passageway over the Euphrates River after days of the sharpest fighting of the Iraq war.
The odour of burnt flesh filled the air and the road was strewn with bombed-out vehicles. About 15 kilometres north of the city, a group of 40 Iraqi prisoners were seen in the custody of US troops.
