Sand, dust cloak Baghdad
26/03/2003 10:28 - (SA)
Baghdad - A cloak of sand and dust coated the Iraqi capital on Wednesday after one of the most violent storms in recent years.
Buildings, palm trees lining the Tigris river, and cars were covered in fine beige dust and the streets showed the marks of tyres from passing vehicules as if snow had fallen.
Nothing escaped the particles which penetrated every nook and cranny and remained suspended in the air during the morning.
Baghdadis, after another night of trial by US and British missiles and bombs, busied themselves washing everything down, hosing their cars and doorsteps.
The strong winds had dropped but visibility was still poor and the sky heavy and dull.
The bad weather has slowed the progress of coalition forces advancing on the Iraqi capital to oust President Saddam Hussein. - Sapa-AFP
