Iraqi expert says Saddam will use WMD

Frankfurt - The former head of Iraq's nuclear programme believes Saddam Hussein will deploy chemical weapons to the extent that he still has them, according to a published report in Germany.
The report in Thursday's editions of Frankfurter Allgemeine quotes Hussein Shahristani as saying he was convinced Saddam would use any and all means at his disposal to save his crumbling regime.
"Assuming he still has any, Saddam Hussein will deploy chemical weapons in any last-stand battle for Baghdad," the one-time head of the nuclear programme said in an interview conducted in Kuwait City.
Shahristani headed Iraq's nuclear programme in the 1980s until his refusal to create a nuclear arsenal resulted in his being thrown in prison.
After 11 years in prison, the Shi'ite scientist used the confusion of an air strike during the 1991 Gulf War to escape his guards and flee into exile. - Sapa-DPA
