Los Angeles - The dramatic rescue of US prisoner of war Jessica Lynch in Iraq earlier this month is soon to be turned into a movie, the Hollywood press said on Thursday.
The US NBC television network plans to turn the rescue of the soldier, captured following an ambush by Iraqi forces on March 23, into a two-hour movie detailing the 19-year-old's ordeal and rescue by her comrades.
"This story is 'Mission: Impossible,' but it's real," one NBC source told Daily Variety. "It's as good a story as you can get from this war. It's uplifting, heroic, compelling and dramatic.
"You see this sort of thing in spy movies and wonder if it's really true. Now we know it is true," the source added.
The entertainment industry bible said the network had begun talks with screenwriters and was expected to pick a producer for the show, which should air between September and March next year, within days.
NBC is trying to secure official rights to Lynch's story, Variety said, adding however that the network was prepared to go ahead with the project even it had to use news reports as the basis of the movie.
The rival CBS network is also studying a possible bio-pic of the events centring on Lynch that grabbed headlines across the United States for days on end, Variety said.
Iraqi forces ambushed Lynch's company after it took a wrong turn near the southern city of Nasiriyah and was found in captivity along with several dead more than a week later.
Lynch is recovering from injuries, which included two broken legs and a broken arm, apparently sustained during her captivity in a US military hospital in Germany.
