Landmine clearance programme
30/04/2003 08:45 - (SA)
Washington - The United States on Tuesday launched a three-year, $25m programme to clear landmines in post-war Iraq.
The state department said the programme, to be run jointly by it and the Pentagon, includes the deployment of a rapid-reaction force for emergency demining and training and equipment for Iraqi deminers.
In addition, it will cover mine awareness programs for refugees and children to be run by the UN Children's Fund (Unicef) and the British-based Mines Advisory Group (MAG), the department said in a statement.
The funds will also help MAG expand its current operations in northern Iraq to the southern and central portions of the country, it said.
