  • Baghdad - United States forces have detained what they describe as 20 "high-value targets" in Operation Desert Sidewinder, the military said on Wednesday, the fourth day of the campaign.

"These individuals consist of former Ba'ath Party leaders and members, former Fedayeen leaders and a former Iraqi military intelligence officer," read a statement, without identifying any of those captured.

In another routine patrol near the town of Taji, just north of Baghdad, troops discovered a cache of 200 rocket-propelled grenades, regularly used in anti-US attacks, it added.

The US military has brought in its most technologically advanced units for Desert Sidewinder, launched on Sunday and aimed at wiping out Fedayeen militia fighters and diehard loyalists of the ousted Ba'ath Party.

"The goal is to catch former regime loyalists, former Republican Guards and paramilitary troops," said Lieutenant-Colonel Bill McDonald said in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit, north of the capital, earlier this week.
