Washington - President George W Bush said on Wednesday that he did not know how close US forces in Iraq were to catching ousted president Saddam Hussein.

"I don't know how close we are to getting Saddam Hussein. Closer than we were yesterday, I guess. All I know is, we're on the hunt," Bush said at a solo White House news conference.

On the controversial issue of weapons of mass destruction, he said: "We have teams of investigators hard at work to prove the truth.

"We are getting closer to the truth. We know he (Saddam) used chemical weapons," he said.
