Washington - US Secretary of State Colin Powell on Sunday condemned a rocket attack on a Baghdad hotel where US officials were staying and said the United States had not expected the level of attacks being staged in the country after the war.

US deputy defence secretary Paul Wolfowitz was staying in the hotel, but was unhurt.

"We did not expect it would be quite this intense this long," Powell said on NBC televsion of the toll being suffered by US troops in Iraq and the number of attacks being carried out.

Powell said "it is a very challenging periods" but added: "I am confident in our ability to deal with it."
