Blast puzzles US
26/10/2003 22:18 - (SA)
Baghdad - Two explosions hit the US-led coalition's main compound in Baghdad late Sunday, the US military said, but gave no further details.
"There were two explosions inside the Green Zone," a military spokesman said, adding that "an investigation was underway."
But a US military officer, on condition of anonymity, said that troops were still trying to locate where the blast actually occurred inside the sprawling compound.
The Green Zone is the coalition's term for a sealed off security area that includes Saddam Hussein's former presidential palace and other administrative buildings.
"The truth is we heard the explosions. We don't know where they happened," he said.
Asked if it was a weapons attack, he said: "I think common sense would say yes. But we really don't know."
