Double bombs rock Baghdad
27/10/2003 08:40 - (SA)
Baghdad - A massive car bomb exploded Monday near the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in central Baghdad, according to journalists on the scene.
A second large blast followed minutes later.
The remains of two burnt out vehicles smouldered on the street in the Karrada district where several international humanitarian organisations are located.
Ambulances and police raced through the streets towards the explosion site as Iraqis were seen running away.
"There's been a very big explosion near our offices, I believe it was the building next to us," ICRC spokesperson Nada Doumani told reporters by telephone as she drove to her offices.
Coalition helicopters flew overhead as a plume of thick black smoke rose into the blue sky.
The blast occurred a day after a barrage of rockets pounded a central Baghdad hotel housing a top US defence official, killing a US soldier and wounding 17 other people.
