Post-Saddam Baghdad worse

Madrid - Life for the residents of Baghdad is worse now than during Saddam Hussein's regime because of the lack of security in the Iraqi capital, Spanish Foreign Minister Ana Palacio said on Monday.
"There is a serious security problem" in Iraq, Palacio told national Spanish television channel TVE.
"Daily life, above all in Baghdad, is in worse condition than during Saddam Hussein's time," she added.
Palacio said maintaining security in Iraq was the responsibility of the US-run Coalition Provisional Authority and the country's interim government, which she said should also make efforts to improve the standard of living.
According to the foreign minister, however, in other Iraqi regions, notably in the south, that were "struck hard by Saddam Hussein's regime," the situation had improved.
Spain has been one of London and Washington's staunchest allies over the Iraqi intervention, providing 1 250 troops for the country's post-war reconstruction, despite Spanish public opinion bitterly opposed to the conflict.
