Haiti mediators may hold key
23/02/2004 11:58 - (SA)
Port-Au-Prince - In a last-minute bid to end Haiti's political crisis amid the spread of an armed rebellion, foreign mediators told opposition leaders late on Sunday they are willing to consider the removal of embattled president Jean Bertrand Aristide, diplomatic sources said on Monday.
The opposition was told that the international community could call for Aristide's departure before the end of his current term if he fails to adhere to a power-sharing deal the opposition has thus far rejected ahead of a looming 17:00 deadline, the sources said.
The offer was presented to the opposition, which is demanding Aristide's immediate removal, just hours after armed rebels, also calling for the president's removal, seized Haiti's second-largest city of Cap-Haitien, the sources said.
