London - British Defence Secretary Geoffrey Hoon told parliament on Monday there were "strong indications" that a vehicle featured in photos showing the alleged torture of Iraqi prisoners by British troops was not in Iraq at the time.

Hoon said he had been told by the Special Investigation Branch of the Royal Military Police that "there are strong indications that the vehicle of which the photographs were taken was not in Iraq during the relevant period".

The photos were published in the Daily Mirror newspaper on May 1.
