US and Iraq council clashes
30/05/2004 22:30 - (SA)
Baghdad - The US-led coalition and the Iraqi Governing Council were at loggerheads on Sunday over the council's preferred choice of tribal leader Ghazi al-Yawar as Iraq's first post-Saddam Hussein president, officials said.
Coalition officials put pressure on council members not to select Yawar during hours of talks, leading Kurdish member Mahmud Othman said.
"Perhaps the coalition will find another solution," he said, adding that the coalition still wanted to discuss the matter.
Bremer and Brahimi were said to prefer Adnan Pachachi, a Sunni moderate and former foreign minister during the 1960s. But the Governing Council has rallied behind Yawar, a leader of the Shammari tribe, one of the largest in Iraq.
Another Iraqi official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the coalition and United Nations intended to propose candidates from outside the Governing Council in an effort to overcome the stalemate.
