Baghdad - An American journalist was kidnapped on Saturday in the southern Iraqi city of Nasiriyah while he was reporting on archaeological sites in the area, the city's deputy governor Adnan al-Sharifi said.
The man was kidnapped along with his Iraqi translator on Friday, said Adnan al-Shoraify, deputy governor of Nasiriyah. He said the translator's family had first reported the two missing.
"The journalist Micah Garen was walking in the market in the town centre when he was kidnapped by unknown men," Sharifi said.
Garen is the founder and head of Four Corners Media, a company specialising in film, photo and written documentaries with offices in New York and Colorado, according to its website. A spokesperson for Italian forces deployed in Nasiriyah, about 320km south-east of Baghdad, said he was looking into the report. A spokesperson for the United States Embassy in Baghdad, Bob Callahan, said he had not heard of the kidnapping and had no information.
Militants in the southern Iraqi city of Basra kidnapped British journalist James Brandon on Friday. They had threatened to kill the 23-year-old, but released him after aides to militant Shiite cleric Muqtada al-Sadr demanded he be freed.
