Baghdad - A United States officer has said US forces killed "slightly over 50 Iraqis" during fighting on Wednesday in Sadr City, the Baghdad stronghold of Shiite militia leader Moqtada Sadr.
US forces pushed in to Sadr City with tanks and Bradley fighting vehicles at around noon on Wednesday, advancing from the south, said a pool reporter embedded with US forces.
The troops met sporadic small arms fire and rocket-propelled grenades.
"A spokesman for the 1st Brigade Combat Team said one soldier had been wounded and medivaced. Another officer said coalition forces had killed slightly over 50 Iraqis identified as firing upon coalition forces," the reporter said.
One US tank was badly damaged by a makeshift bomb.
A US military spokesperson confirmed that there had been an offensive in Sadr City on Wednesday, but refused to discuss details of "ongoing operations".
