Baghdad - A man tried to drive a car rigged with explosives into the compound of Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison early on Sunday, but the vehicle failed to explode, a US military spokesperson said.

"There was an attempt to breach the outer perimeter. No injuries were involved and my understanding is that the vehicle did not explode," said the spokesperson, adding that a makeshift bomb had been stashed inside the car.

The spokesperson was unable to say whether US soldiers opened fire on the person driving the vehicle, or provide any further details.
