Red Crescent enters Fallujah
22/11/2004 22:03 - (SA)
Geneva - The Iraqi Red Crescent carried relief supplies and medical help into Fallujah on Monday, the first time an independent organization has been able to visit the embattled city since US-led forces invaded two weeks ago, the Red Cross said.
"We gave them satellite phones and they called us" when they entered the city, said Ahmed Rawi, spokesperson for the International Committee of the Red Cross in Baghdad.
The convoy consisted of ambulances and three trucks loaded with blankets, drinking water and first-aid kits, Rawi told The Associated Press.
"The authorities told them it's not safe for them to remain for more than one day," he said.
The ICRC doesn't expect to learn until Tuesday what happened on the trip to El-Roudha Mohammediah mosque.
"There was supposed to be a gathering of wounded people, civilians who need urgent relief supplies," said Rawi. ^
