Riot at Abu Ghraib prison
07/06/2005 20:59 - (SA)
Baghdad - A riot broke out at the US-run Abu Ghraib prison in western Baghdad during a failed escape attempt by an Iraqi inmate, said the military on Tuesday.
The military said the "disturbance" happened late on Sunday after the inmate was caught trying to break out during a heavy sandstorm.
Detainees in several compounds threw rocks at portable light generators and guards before soldiers and guards quelled the unrest, which lightly injured four guards and six detainees.
On May 26, three detainees escaped from Abu Ghraib through two holes found under a compound fence.
The US military has not announced if the escapees have been caught. It is unclear on what charges they were being held
and whether they had been convicted.
The prison houses about 3 500 detainees.
