Baghdad - The Iraqi tribunal announced on Tuesday that Saddam Hussein would be tried on genocide charges over the Anfal campaign against Kurds that left an estimated 180 000 people dead.
Charges are also being laid against six co-defendants including Ali Hassan al-Majid, also known as Chemical Ali, chief investigating judge Raed al-Juhi told a press conference.
"The investigation has been completed for the Anfal campaign and the seven accused have been referred to the court," he said.
Last week, chief prosecutor Jaafar al-Mussawi had said that Saddam may be put on trial soon over the killings of around 180 000 people, mostly Kurds, and the destruction of 4 500 villages in the Anfal campaign between 1987-1989.
