  • Baghdad - A roadside bomb has killed three United States Army soldiers in Iraq on Friday, says the military.

The explosion hit their vehicle in a US convoy about 11:45 in Babil province, south of Baghdad. The names of the soldiers were withheld, pending notification of their relatives.

According to reports, the attack raised to at least 2 414 the number of members of the US military who had died since the beginning of the Iraq war in March 2003.

The US command provided no other details about the attack, but it appeared to have been a roadside bomb explosion that Iraqi police had reported.

Babil police captain Muthana Khalid said that a roadside bomb heavily damaged a Humvee in a US military convoy about 11:30 near, Mahaweel city, 56km south of Baghdad.

He said two American soldiers were immediately killed by the blast and that one was seriously wounded and evacuated for medical treatment.
