Baghdad - Slain al-Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was betrayed by an aide and fellow Jordanian, Iraq's state-owned television said on Monday, citing a security source.
"The person that revealed Zarqawi's whereabouts to Iraqi forces was one of his aides who holds Jordanian citizenship," al-Iraqiya said, but without giving further details.
Zarqawi, who had a $25m US bounty on his head, was killed along with five others on June 7 in a US air strike on his hideout in farmland north of Baghdad.
The US military said it was able track down the country's most wanted militant by following the movements of his so-called spiritual guide Sheikh Abdel Rahman. His nationality was not given.
Jordan has said its intelligence services played a key role in finding Zarqawi, who faced death sentences in his home country.
