Saddam Hussein's execution filmed

A handout picture made available by the US army shows ousted Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein just after his capture on 13 December 2003.

  • Baghdad - Ousted dictator Saddam Hussein was hanged on Saturday, officials said, as Iraq braced itself nervously for possible reprisals by his remaining supporters.

"The execution of Saddam Hussein is complete," state television said in a text headline broadcast against a background of Qur'anic verses.

"Saddam Hussein was hanged until death ensued. A black page in the history of Iraq has been turned," it added in a second news flash, as joyful popular music filled the airwaves.

Mariam al-Rayis, an adviser to Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki who attended the execution, said in an interview on state television news: "It was between 05:30 and 06:30.

    "The whole thing was filmed."

Rayis said the execution was witnessed by a judge, a prosecutor and journalists.

Saddam's Jordan-based defence team, which largely boycotted the year-long trial, made one last desperate shake of the dice by going to court in the United States to demand that the ousted despot remain in US military custody.

    Backlash

But US authorities in Baghdad insisted that the detainees have been under Iraqi legal authority for more than a year and were only being held in an American military base as a simple security precaution.

Security officials fear a backlash, however, from hardline factions among Iraq's Sunni minority, including the Islamist and nationalist militant groups that make up the deadliest elements of Iraq's violent insurgency.

Ahead of the verdict, the head of Iraq's interior ministry command centre, Brigadier General Abdel Karim Khalaf, told AFP that the country's beleaguered security forces were on high alert.

"Certainly, this is a big event, putting into effect the execution of this serial killer," he said.

"We will take measures proportionate to this event.

"We will put all our forces on the streets so that no lives are jeopardised."

    - AFP

      Explanation for Kara
    30/12/2006 08:51
Killing someone is a God decision. Generally speaking, only God (the Giver of Live) can know when a human life is of no further value to anyone. For that reason, the death penalty is generally morally unacceptable and hypocritical. However, "government" necessitates an important exception to the anti-death-penalty rule. No One-Ring addicted "king" (or Prez) ever gives up Power voluntarily. Until he is dead, his followers will cause trouble. Hence the wisdom of the hanging. Call it Karma,Kara - John Wilkenson

Saddam was a threat to ALL of us!
    30/12/2006 08:53
No matter how you feel about the current administration, please keep in mind 2 things: 1) many of us have family in Iraq or Afghanistan that need our support 2) there may not have been a direct connection between Saddam and 9/11, but there were signs of his chemical testing (on his OWN people) being taken further. JUST REMEMBER HOW YOU FELT on 9/11!!! Do you EVER want to feel like that again? I don't. I want my children safe. - Kat

      Re: Big Mistake
    30/12/2006 08:58
Hey Cal--you must be a liberal. People were spouting the same kind of crap when the US had the testicular fortitude to take on Hitler. BTW--Germany never attacked us either. To quote Edmund Burke "All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." Go back and read your history lessons. - Anne

      We created the monster.
    30/12/2006 08:59
That which we created we destroyed. Saddam was a US/Soviet creation of the Cold War. We created the monster. It was our responsiblity to get rid of him. It's about time. - Rick

      Bush, Victor?
    30/12/2006 09:00
Victor, so let me get this straight: Civilians who die in the midst of fire between coalition and Iraqi soldiers and insurgents/al qaeda make bush as much a killer as saddam who points out people to be executed and intentionally gasses and kills thousands. Your moral equivalence makes it impossible to take you seriously. You're just another person who whines about people that actually DO something about injustice as opposed to doing something yourself. - David

      SADDAM HUSSEIN'S DEATH
    30/12/2006 09:06
The Death of Saddam Hussein will not end killings and crimes in Iraq. I think Iraq will be destroyed and America and its allies will secure all the oil. In short, this war began a long time ago, even before Saddam was born, it's war between religions, it will never end! - SEM, Qwaqwa

      Saddam - Bush's Boy
    30/12/2006 09:08
Saddam did not do anything without consulting the Saudi Royal family & the Bush family - now they have killed one of their own. Is this going to help Social Security? Are my wages and quality of life going up - directly because of this event? Does this eliminate the DEFICIT? - critical thinker

      Idiots
    30/12/2006 09:13
Honestly....how can you possibly compare Bush to this clown? Bush didn't TARGET civilians. Guess what: in war innocent people die! It happens, look at all the innocent Serbs the liberals killed in bombings while going after Milosevic! Why no cries of war criminal against Clinton and the Euros? The International Left conspires to condemn conservative free world leaders while giving a pass to dictators and despots. This "right wing = nazi" language is EXTREMELY dangerous - Kyle

      Weapons of Mass Destruction
    30/12/2006 09:13
The weapons of mass destruction are those crazies who strap bombs around their waistes and then blow themselves up together with a lot of innocent people!!!! - Philip

      WMD's found in FIRST war
    30/12/2006 09:14
The war was not looking for new weapons of mass destruction. Saddam was asked to account for weapons ALREADY INVENTORIED after the 1st Gulf War. As usual he refused to comply. Whether he shipped them out or destroyed them, all he needed to do was answer to the inspectors on what happened to weapons WE HAD ALREADY SEEN AND TOUCHED. A very evil man has been served justice... - Rick

      SUPERFAST !!!!
    30/12/2006 09:21
I am not sure that this will do anything for the victims', their families or the world for that matter. Surely hanging an already old and ailing man is a reward more than a punishment?? - Andrew

      A tyrant is gone
    30/12/2006 09:26
This is a great day for the Iraqi people, but it is not an end to the violence and bloodshed there. There is too much hate in many of their hearts for any peace soon. God help them all! - mel

      Hypocritical death
    30/12/2006 09:28

      About time
    30/12/2006 09:29
I'm so sick of listening to all you liberal idiots that cannot think for yourselves. Stop listening to the media and liberal professors and think for yourself. Just because you hear something on T.V. does not make it true. Who cares if they didn't find any weapons of mass destruction. We do know Saddam helped finance terrorists. By the way, if we lived in a country where the leader tortured and killed us, would we not want help? How would you like to be an Iraqi citizen and not get help? - Chris

      Buh bye, maddaS
    30/12/2006 09:31
What is all this talk about WMD's? Don't you people pay attention to the facts or do you just bye into CNN's pathetically biased reporting? WMD's were not the only reason we entered Iraq. What about freedom, democracy, rapes, murders, tortures, 17 UN resolutions, support of terrorism, and other reasons? Why is it so hard for the liberal mind to register the facts instead of concentrating solely on WMD's which he clearly had since he used them against Iran and the Kurds? Pathetic. Wake up. - Eric

      Justice
    30/12/2006 09:43
I defy anybody who has been watching the accounts this evening of the reign of terror that Saddam put the people of Iraq through to tell me that we had no business going into Irag. The world is a better place than it was about five hours ago with no Saddam. Would it be that we had the cojones to go into Iran and take care of the madman that's in charge of that country. - Vic

      Saddam
    30/12/2006 09:43
Where is Osama? Where is the real perpetrator of this War On Terror? Saddam was the easy target. No WMD's have been displayed. We have only heard "he said/she" said on this issue. The testimony of Iraqi officers and politicians attempting to save their own skins. The invasion of Iraq was wrong, it was based on faulty information and fear based rhetoric. Osama should have been the primary target all along. Where is he, Georgie? - Jim

      Saddam's Execution - The point is ....
    30/12/2006 09:53
Very few people dispute the horror some people experienced in Iraq under Saddam's rule. He was immensely cruel and savage. But how will his execution help heal the people of Iraq? Also, during the Christmas period where love and reconciliation should be the central theme in our lives, I'm amazed at the blood thirsty opinion of the majority of the comments. Having said that, no-one I know was affected by his blatant disregard for human rights so maybe my thoughts are too objective - Joey Alberto
