Ramadi - A top al-Qaeda fighter was killed on Monday in the western province of Anbar along with his two aides, police said.
Abu Tiba al-Karbuli, an Afghani, was killed north of the provincial capital of Ramadi, a Sunni insurgent stronghold in western Iraq, police officer Colonel Salan al-Gi'ud said.
"A police patrol came under fire from two civilian cars carrying al-Qaeda members," he said.
The police fired back and killed Karbuli and two others, Gi'ud said, adding that a fourth militant he named as Abu Hamza al-Iraqi was arrested.
He said Karbuli was the head of the militant group for the western Iraqi region.
