Baghdad - A huge fire whipped through the Central Bank of Iraq in Baghdad on Monday, causing serious damage to three floors of the 10-storey building, an Interior Ministry official said.
"The blaze broke out after midnight," the official said, adding it was finally extinguished at about 05:00 (02:00 GMT) and that no casualties had been reported.
"The flames burned three storeys of the building, causing extensive material damage but there were no casualties," he said on condition of anonymity.
The civil defence directorate, which falls under the Interior Ministry, will conduct an investigation to determine the cause of the fire, he added.
An AFP photographer said US and Iraqi forces on Monday set up security controls around the bank which is located in the Bab al-Muadham neighbourhood of northern Baghdad.
The central bank is one of Iraq's most important state financial institutions.
