Kut - Two earthquakes jolted the southeastern Iraqi city of Kut, causing no injuries or damage but panicking residents, the meteorological department and residents said on Thursday.
The first tremor, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, struck at about 14:00 (11:00 GMT) on Wednesday and the second, measuring 4.3, followed at about 22:00, the meteorological department said.
"The quakes caused fear and panic among residents, who ran into the streets in case of aftershocks," the statement said.
Residents said the quakes were the first in memory in Kut, about 175km southeast of Baghdad.
The meteorological department said tremors were common in other parts of Iraq, especially in areas near the Iranian border.
