US missiles hit market
26/03/2003 13:04 - (SA)
Baghdad - At least 15 burnt corpses lay in a poor residential area of northern Baghdad, apparently killed in a US-led air raid on the Iraqi capital on Wednesday, Reuters Television correspondents said.
"Apparently two missiles struck apartment blocks," one of the correspondents said from Baghdad's Shaab district.
They said they had counted at least 15 bodies lying in a street, where several shops and apartment buildings were badly damaged. Several cars nearby were on fire or smouldering.
An Iraqi Information Ministry official said a strike on a busy market area had caused "many, many casualties".
US and British planes and missiles have pounded the Iraqi capital since the start of the war last Thursday.
Amnesty International on Wednesday called on all military authorities involved in the war in Iraq to step up protection of Iraqi civilians as fighting increased in urban areas. - Sapa/AFP/Reuters
