US lifts London ban
12/07/2005 12:50 - (SA)
London - The United States Air Force on Tuesday lifted an order barring personnel from visiting London because of safety fears, the US Embassy said.
The order, issued following bombings last Thursday, caused some indignation in London after it was reported by a newspaper.
Military commanders issued the "battle staff directive" to 12 000 British-based air force personnel on Friday, a day after the four bomb blasts which killed at least 52 people.
"The order was made in a battle staff directive from our wing commander," Cindy Dorfner, a spokesperson for the RAF Mildenhall airbase in Suffolk, eastern England, was quoted as saying.
A local living near another US airbase in Suffolk, RAF Lakenhall, criticised the decision in a newspaper.
"This is a typical over-reaction by the Americans and sends out completely the wrong message," the unnamed Briton said. - AFP/AP
