London - The confirmed number of people killed in last week's London bombings rose on Thursday to 54, after a man died in hospital of his injuries, the Metropolitan Police said.

About 700 people were injured in the July 7 attacks.

Metropolitan Police commissioner Sir Ian Blair, at a luncheon with foreign journalists, said earlier that eight people were in critical condition and that the death toll was likely to rise.

Eleven of the dead have so far been officially named by police.
