  • Cairo - The Egyptian chemist being interrogated in Cairo in connection with the London explosions admitted to knowing one of the suspects in the attacks, said the state-owned daily al-Ahram on Monday.

Magdy al-Nashar, 33, told investigators that he had met Hasib Hussain, whose name appeared in his personal organiser, at a mosque.

Al-Nashar said he had helped Hussain to rent an apartment in Leeds that belonged to an Iraqi doctor.

The chemist, who obtained a PhD from Leeds University earlier this year, told investigators he had no part in the attacks.

Security sources told the Cairo newspaper that reports that an agent from Scotland Yard was observing the interrogations were false.

A British embassy spokesperson declined to comment on the matter, saying the embassy never discussed ongoing investigations.

Several Egyptian officials had said that al-Nashar would not been turned over to Britain, noting that the countries did not have an extradition treaty.
