London - The number of confirmed dead in the July 7 bombings in London rose to 56 on Monday, police said.

There were no immediate details about the 56th victim in Britain's worst terror attacks.

More than 40 of the dead have been identified since the apparent suicide bombings on three Underground trains and a double-decker bus, the Metropolitan police said.

About 700 people were injured in the attacks, with a handful still in hospital in serious condition.

Police said earlier this week that they did not expect the death toll to rise significantly.
