26/07/2005 18:31 - (SA)
London - The family of one of the London bombing suspects said on Tuesday they were "shocked" to discover their son was involved in the investigation and immediately contacted police after seeing his picture on TV news.
In a statement released through police in Harrow, north London, the family of Muktar Said Ibrahim said: "We are a peaceful family, having lived in this country since 1990.
"We were shocked when we saw Muktar's picture in the national news. We immediately went to the police station and made statements."
They said their son, aged 27, had left home in 1997. "He is not a close family member. The family wish to express their shock regarding recent events and in no way condone any acts of terrorism."
Superintendent Richard Freeman said the family were being fully co-operative with police and had been the first people to contact them in relation to the identification of the suspected bomber. - Sapa-dpa
