Commuters snap up survival kits
27/07/2005 22:20 - (SA)
London - Sales of commuter survival kits have soared in London following two terrorist bomb attacks on the city's transport system, the kits' designer said on Wednesday.
The kit, small enough to fit into a handbag, contains a mask to filter dust, a torch, whistle, water and antiseptic wipes.
SurvivalBox.co.uk managing director Simon Johnson said demand had increased 150% since the July 7 suicide bombings of three London Underground trains and a bus which killed 52 people as well as the attackers.
Tensions grew after a repeat attack on July 21, in which no one was injured because the terrorists' bombs failed to explode.
"People are buying the kits to reassure themselves about travelling on the Underground," Johnson said.
"Our customers want to demonstrate that they are not afraid. "Having a commuter kit gives them the confidence to go back to the Tube," he said, using the popular word for the Underground train system.
