Brits warned of London attacks

London - Britain received intelligence that Muslim extremists were targeting London months before the bomb attacks last July in which 52 people were killed, a British newspaper reported on Sunday.
"Senior White House officials have confirmed that Britain received a warning about a potential attack on London involving a cell of four bombers just a few months before the July atrocities," said the Observer, citing well-placed sources.
Intelligence passed on by Saudi authorities provided specific details about the plot, including that the attack was being planned by four Islamic militants and that some of them would be British citizens.
The information from an arrested Saudi militant suggested the attack would take place within six months and target the Underground rail system or a London nightclub.
The newspaper quotes a Saudi security adviser as saying he was "convinced" that the information they passed on was "directly linked" to the July plot.
The Saudi militant said a Libyan businessman was the main source of funds for Islamic militants in Britain, and that he was to receive orders from someone with a Syrian telephone number.
