'Major' Hezbollah attack foiled
13/08/2006 22:32 - (SA)
Jerusalem - The Israeli army thwarted a major attack planned for Sunday by the Shi'ite Hezbollah militia, public television reported.
Without giving too much detail because of military censorship restrictions, it said Israeli forces were on the alert on both sides of the border with Lebanon and had been successful in preventing the attack.
According to a military source, two drones packed with explosives were shot down in the skies of southern Lebanon and over Galilee in Israel respectively.
Hezbollah also fired more than 250 rockets into Israel on Sunday, the highest number in one day since the current conflict erupted on July 12.
A UN-agreed ceasefire is due to come into effect at 05:00 GMT on Monday after more than a month of fighting.
Earlier, AP quoted a top general as saying Israeli troops in southern Lebanon will hold their fire after the truce takes effect if Hezbollah fighters stop their attacks.
"If the terrorists stop their fire, then the (army) will halt its fire," said Major-General Benny Gantz, the head of Israel's ground forces.
"The next few days are days of uncertainty," Gantz said.
Israeli troops were to remain in southern Lebanon until they were replaced by the Lebanese army and a UN force, he said. - AFP/AP
