Soldiers 'alive and healthy'
16/08/2006 22:13 - (SA)
Washington - Two Israeli soldiers whose capture by Hezbollah in July set off the month-long war between the two are understood to be alive and in good health, Israeli deputy prime minister Shimon Peres said on Tuesday.
"To the best of our knowledge they are alive and healthy," Peres said during a visit to Washington.
The July 12 capture of the two soldiers - which Lebanon's Hezbollah militia later offered in exchange for Arab prisoners being held by Israel - set off Israel's fierce counter-attack on the group's southern Lebanon stronghold which quickly escalated into a full-blown fight.
The UN peace resolution passed last week emphasised "the need" for the "unconditional release" of the abducted soldiers, but did not make it a condition of the peace deal.
The deal provides for Hezbollah's disarmament after the deployment of 15 000 Lebanese soldiers and 15 000 UN peacekeepers in southern Lebanon.
