Nasrallah regrets abduction
27/08/2006 19:48 - (SA)
Beirut - Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah expressed regret Sunday for the capture of two Israeli soldiers that sparked a month-long war between his militia and Israel.
"Had we known that the kidnapping of the soldiers would have led to this, we would definitely not have done it," he said in an interview aired on Lebanese television, adding that the two sides "are not heading towards a second round" of fighting.
The two Israeli soldiers were seized during a July 12 Hezbollah cross border raid that killed eight others.
Much of southern Lebanon lies in ruins after Israel's 34-day offensive against Hezbollah fighters that left at least 1 287 Lebanese - nearly all civilians - dead and 4 054 wounded.
About 160 Israelis, mostly soldiers, were also killed during the conflict.
Nasrallah spoke with the Lebanese private television station NTV on the eve of a visit to Beirut by UN chief Kofi Annan, who was to discuss with Lebanese leaders the deployment of around 15 000 UN troops in southern Lebanon and related security matters.
