Israeli planes fly over Beirut
30/08/2006 14:06 - (SA)
Beirut - Israeli warplanes flew over Beirut and parts of eastern and central Lebanon on Wednesday, a senior military official said.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the Lebanese army would issue a statement about the Israeli overflights later on Wednesday.
Since a UN-brokered ceasefire ended fighting between Israel and Hezbollah on August 14, Israeli jets and drones have routinely flown over southern and eastern Lebanon, where Hezbollah has strongholds, apparently on reconnaissance flights.
The Lebanese government has accused Israel of violating the UN ceasefire with its overflights and by maintaining a sea and air blockade of Lebanon.
Blockade
UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan has urged Israel to lift its blockade of Lebanon. He renewed that call on Wednesday in a news conference in Jerusalem with Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert.
Olmert sidestepped the issue, saying only that he expects full implementation of the UN resolution that ended the war.
