Iran discovers uranium reserves
10/02/2003 10:08 - (SA)
Teheran - Iranian President Mohammed Khatami announced that Iran has discovered uranium reserves in the country and intends to produce its own nuclear fuel rods for energy production, the government's official news agency IRNA reported Sunday.
Khatami declared that the nuclear project would be for peaceful means and promised to co-operate with global nuclear regulators with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The reserves were found near Yazd in central Iran and the production sites are in nearby Isfahan and Kashan.
IAEA inspectors are due to visit Iran in two weeks to visit two other nuclear sites - one in Arak for uranium enrichment and a heavy- water nuclear reactor in Natanz - that the United States said in December could be used to make nuclear weapons.
Iraq has rejected those claims from Washington, which has called Iran a part of an axis of evil, which also consists of Iraq and North Korea, for its alleged pursuit of weapons of mass destruction.
"We never follow the aim of building nuclear weapons," Khatami retorted.
