Hijacked plane leaves Havana
01/04/2003 18:21 - (SA)
Havana - A hijacked Cuban airliner with about 20 people aboard took off Tuesday from Havana to an unknown destination, according to AFP reporters at the airport.
The Antonov-24, held by a man claiming to be armed with two grenades, spent more than 12 hours on the tarmac, where it was refuelled and supplied with food and beverages.
Amid intense negotiations, the hijacker allowed about two dozen people, including a small child, to leave the plane.
The plane had been en route from the Isle of Youth to Havana late on Monday when the hijacker ordered the crew to head for Miami, but it was forced by lack of fuel to land at Havana's Jose Marti International Airport.
