Hijackers threaten to kill 40
03/04/2003 20:30 - (SA)
Havana - Armed men who hijacked a ferry threatened on Thursday to kill the 40 passengers if they are not given enough fuel to travel to the United States, which they already tried to reach the previous day, Cuban authorities said.
"Force will be used if the situation of the hostages becomes critical," Cuban authorities said in a statement.
The passenger ferry was anchored a few metres off the docks in the port of Mariel, 50km west of Havana.
Authorities, who were in radio contact with the men, said two hijackers freed two women and a man who were "in delicate health conditions."
Authorities said earlier that the ferry was towed to Mariel after drifting at sea for 20 hours.
The men, thought to number about 15, seized the coastal ferry in Havana early on Wednesday and demanded to be taken to the United States. Cuban authorities said they were armed with guns and knives.
