Parents dump conjoined twins
20/07/2003 22:41 - (SA)
New Delhi - Parents of 36-day-old conjoined twins have abandoned the baby boys in a Delhi hospital and are refusing to take them home, a report said on Sunday.
The baby boys are joined below the chest and their intestines and genitalia are fused, the United News of India reported. They share one pair of legs, but have two pairs of arms.
Doctors at the city's All India Institute of Medical Sciences have ruled out separation surgery on the twins as it would mean risking the life of one baby.
Their mother didn't know until the delivery that she was carrying conjoined twins because she had not undergone prenatal foetus tests, hospital sources said.
She had a normal delivery, but the parents have refused to take home their newborn babies.
A non-governmental organisation has sought the adoption of the boys but doctors said that would require several formalities. - Sapa-DPA
