A euro for your Iraqi thoughts
17/02/2004 10:23 - (SA)
Alicante, Spain - Daring to ask about the thorny issue of Iraqi weapons of mass destruction earned a Spanish reporter a euro on Monday from Spanish Defence Minister Federico Trillo, by way of cryptic response.
The journalist with SER radio tried to elicit an update to the government's position that it backed the US-led intervention in Iraq on the basis that the Baghdad regime was widely believed at the time to possess such weapons.
Trillo, attending a press conference in the eastern city of Alicante, reached into his pocket and fished out a coin.
"I've been carrying this euro around with me all week to give to the first person who asks me about weapons of mass destruction.
"You've won," smiled Trillo.
